Young at hearttttttt
One Sunday, not too long ago, my friends and I set out towards the mall (no not the shopping mall, the grass one in DC, duh!!). As normal as this journey sounds, it was far from the norm. Why was it so unusual? Well, please open your mind before reading on. So, my friends and I had, and still have, this craze with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. To put it bluntly, we wanted to be pirates for at least a day. Many people would have just been satisfied with dreaming about being a pirate. However, we were not. We trekked to the mall that day, not in regular clothing but with eye patches, clashing outfits, shiny jewelry, and of course, a pirate flag. The only problem with this excursion was that we were still on land. Yes, that seems to be the main problem with the whole pirate dream. How can you be a pirate without a boat and some water?
Well, being the resourceful students we are, this problem was no match for us. Our eyes, excuse me, our eye was set upon the Tidal Basin. Yes, that little area of water by the Jefferson Memorial provided us with both boats and water. Even though these boats were in fact paddle boats (it’s ok to laugh), they provided us with transportation across the tidal basin. Yet, the final piece of the pirate puzzle remained, how could we plunder innocent tourists with no weapons? Although conventional pirate weapons would have been pretty cool, we decided against muskets, pistols, and cannonballs. Therefore, we resorted to something that was possibly even better, super soakers and water balloons. That Sunday, we roamed the Tidal Basin as real pirates. Luckily, there were no casualties. However, some tourists might be a little leery of the Tidal Basin from now on.
As you might be wondering…yes, this event has been recounted for a reason. I guess as a young adult (I shudder at the word, adult that is) entering the “official” workplace, I have seen and learned many things. While concepts, formulas, and experience continue to be looked upon as the most valuable things one can learn from an internship or a job, it has also opened my eyes to something else. Now, as a disclaimer, I am not referring specifically to my co-workers in the Arlington office. This reference is more general than anything. Nevertheless, I’ve found that many adults and workers find themselves caught up in their work (sometimes even I do!). Obviously working long hours can be a necessity of any job, but I encourage everyone to think of Peter Pan for a second. Peter Pan emphasizes never growing up. I realize that we cannot control how our bodies look on the outside, but take some time in your life to do some childish things like being a pirate. It keeps you happier and healthier no matter what age you are. Furthermore, I’ve found the older you get, the least likely people are to yell at you for these childish things. Take advantage of this!!! It will certainly put a smile on your face and keep you young at heart.
FYI!!!: “Talk like a pirate day” is September 19th
